MALIKAH Self-Defense Instructor
Job Description:
Malikah is seeking a skilled and passionate individual to join our team as a Self-Defense Instructor. In this role, you will have the opportunity to empower Muslim women and girls by teaching essential self-defense techniques and strategies. You will be responsible for conducting self-defense classes both at the Malikah Center in Astoria and at various locations across New York City.
Responsibilities:
Self-Defense Instruction:
Deliver self-defense classes for Muslim women and girls, focusing on practical techniques, situational awareness, assertiveness, and empowerment.
Incorporate effective teaching methods to ensure participants gain confidence, strength, and the ability to protect themselves.
Training and Skill Development:
Continuously enhance your own knowledge and skills in self-defense techniques and strategies, attending relevant training and staying updated on industry best practices.
Collaborate with the Malikah team to develop and adapt training materials and resources to meet the specific needs and cultural sensitivities of Muslim women and girls.
Stay informed about emerging self-defense and personal safety trends and share that knowledge with participants.
Class Coordination and Administration:
Coordinate class schedules and logistics, ensuring smooth operations for self-defense classes at the Malikah Center in Astoria and other locations across NYC.
Communicate with participants, providing necessary information about class schedules, requirements, and any updates or changes.
Maintain accurate attendance records and complete necessary administrative tasks related to class registration and participant waivers.
Community Engagement:
Actively engage with the community, promoting the self-defense program and encouraging participation from Muslim women and girls in Astoria and throughout NYC.
Collaborate with community organizations, mosques, and other stakeholders to expand outreach efforts and create partnerships to increase program accessibility.
Represent Malikah at events, workshops, and community forums to raise awareness about the importance of self-defense and personal safety for Muslim women and girls.
Qualifications:
Prior martial arts or athletic experience, with a solid foundation in self-defense techniques and principles.
Strong teaching and instructional skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and demonstrate self-defense techniques to diverse groups of participants.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to create a safe and supportive learning environment for participants.
Ability to adapt instruction to accommodate varying skill levels, ensuring an inclusive and empowering experience for all participants.
Willingness to travel and conduct self-defense classes at various locations across New York City, in addition to teaching at the Malikah Center in Astoria.
Knowledge of the unique needs and cultural sensitivities of Muslim women and girls is preferred but not required. Willingness to learn and adapt teaching approaches to meet their needs is essential.
Certification or training in self-defense instruction is a plus, but not mandatory. Training will be provided to the selected candidate if needed.
This is a part-time position, and the weekly class schedule will be determined based on program needs and participant availability.
Compensation:
$25/hr, 20 hours per week
